5.8 Magnitude Earthquake shakes the East Coast

virginia_earthquake_intensity_map_august_23_2011Free News Press – A 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook residents near Mineral, Virginia at 1:51 pm ET, on August 23, 2011. Initially, the US Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at a 5.9 magnitude, but has since downgraded the event to a 5.8 magnitude rating.

The location of the earthquake was at 37.936°N, 77.933°W with a depth of 3.7 miles. Mineral, Virginia is located only 5 miles from the epicenter of this earthquake. Another small town Louisa, Virginia was located 7 miles from the earthquake.

Washington D.C. was 84 miles from the earthquake activity. The Pentagon had evacuated after the earthquake.

The USGS received 8518 responses from people on the East Coast that felt the earthquake. People as-far as New York and Illinois reported feeling the earthquake.

Damage reports have prompted some buildings to be evacuated. There was a measurable amount of damage, but no deaths reported yet.

A Virginia nuclear power plant lost power and had to run on emergency diesel generator power. There was interruption of mobile phone service for residents in areas of Virginia.
