Asian Tiger Mosquito Invades Los Angeles County

LA PALMA Calif. (FNP) – La Palma city officials are warning that the dangerous Tiger Mosquito has invaded Los Angeles County this year.

While many mosquitoes come out to feed at dusk, these mosquitoes are aggressive even during the daylight hours.

The tiger mosquito, sometimes called the forest day mosquito, has black and white striped legs and black and white striped bodies. These pests originated in the subtropical areas of Southwest Asia.

The mosquitoes are a significant pest because they closely associate with humans rather than other living animals in wetlands and forests. They feed all day long, not just at dusk or dawn.

Last week the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) launched their third door-to-door campaign to spray poison and provide educational material for residents.

“We are continuing to evaluate the infestation and hoping to establish its boundaries before the mosquitoes may go dormant for the winter,” says Director of Community Affairs Truc Dever. “That way, we can better target our control efforts when mosquito breeding resumes next spring.”

The mosquito lays eggs in small containers with water. It is important to replace the water in bird baths and pour-out other standing water around the yard.

The Asian tiger mosquito is responsible for a recent dengue fever outbreak in Florida, Texas and Hawaii. West Nile virus, chikungunya, and several other viruses that can cause encephalitis are spread through this vector.
