School Districts Prepare for New Round of Layoffs

COSTA MESA Calif. (FNP) – The Orange County Department of Education says that nine school districts may not be able to meet the budget obligations over the next two years unless the voters pass a proposed tax increase in the next general election.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, said that the latest review of school district budgets shows that “one-third of public school students in California attend a district in financial jeopardy.”

The Cypress School District recently considered either selling or leasing some of their properties in the event of the worst-case scenario. “The deep cuts made to school funding—and looming uncertainties about the future—are driving school districts to the brink of insolvency,” Torlakson said this week.

Superintendent of the county education department, Bill Habermehl, says that nearly every district will have layoffs. “That’s the only way they can balance their budgets.”

The state did not identify which districts are in trouble in their February interim statement, but did say that seven districts in the state “will not” be able to meet their obligations. None of those districts are in Orange County.

“There’s simply no other way to describe it: this is an emergency,” Torlakson said last week.
