Local Representative Proposes New Oversight of Agencies

CYPRESS Calif. (FNP) – The Cypress City Council is supporting a resolution made by State Senator Bob Huff that would require water companies and agencies to be subject to the same review and audit process as other utilities.

The city council passed a resolution that would modify the Public Utilities Act making the financial records of water corporations more transparent. State Senate Bill 1364 would give ratepayers greater involvement in the rate adjustment process.

The council encouraged residents to send a letter of support for SB 1364 to their state representatives and to Governor Jerry Brown.

Golden State Water Company (GSWC) has proposed a yearly rate increase for 2013, 2014, and 2015. This would affect 15,300 customers in the communities of Cypress, Stanton, Placentia, and portions of Anaheim, Cowen Heights, Lemon Heights, Orange, Santa Ana and Yorba Linda.

Depending on the user’s water consumption, their water bill could increase 24 percent in 2013. The increase for the following years will be determined at a later date and will be based on the inflation rate.

The city is also requesting residents to send a letter outlining their support or lack of support for the rate increase to:
