Supermoon 2012 Excites Residents

CYPRESS Calif. (FNP) – While cloud cover disappointed some residents in Texas, residents of California were able to enjoy the supermoon at around 8:30 pm Saturday May 5th 2012.

Early Saturday evening the moon appeared to be about 14 percent bigger and about 30 percent brighter as the orbit (not to be confused with lunar orbit) reached its closest point to earth. Combine the perigee with a full moon, and earthlings experienced what astronomers call a perigee-syzygy (aka supermoon) of the Earth-Moon-Sun system.

Southern California residents were able to view the supermoon with no obstructions. Other Americans were not as lucky.

Some theorists speculated that the added gravitational forces can cause earthquakes. Indeed the perigee can create strong tidal forces, but there is little evidence to suggest an association between earthquakes and the phenomenon.

Neither the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan nor the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami coincided with a supermoon.

There are degrees of supermoon. During an extreme supermoon, the perigee can occur within one hour of syzygy (when the earth, moon, and sun are in a line).

If you missed Saturday’s display, another supermoon will occur on November 14, 2016.
