Local Governments Review Use of Old Pacific Electric Right-of-Way

LA PALMA (Calif.) FNP – The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is reviewing the use of vacant land previously used by the Pacific Electric Red Car system. The local corridor under consideration runs from Paramount to Santa Ana.

Some of the tracks have already been removed, including the sections along the north boundary of Cypress and the southern portion of La Palma. The association of governments is investigating several possible land uses.

There are many alternatives, including a new transportation system using buses or streetcars. The corridor is not wide enough for a road, but a light rail transit system or a low-speed maglev system could fit.

The city of La Palma has come out against any use of the land for a transportation system. The association of governments is also considering the no-use option.

La Palma opposes any development along the former Pacific-Electric right-of-way. The La Palma City Council has passed a series of “no-build” resolutions since 2005 to keep the land from being used for transportation.

The Pacific Electric Car system was in operation from 1901 until 1961. The tracks ran near the old Yoast Market on Crescent Avenue near Moody Street, in a diagonal direction towards Santa Ana.

The study will go beyond Paramount to Los Angeles and Vernon. The final round of community meetings is being held this month. There will be a meeting this Saturday, May 19th at the Walter Ehlers Community Center in Buena Park. The center is located at 8150 Knott Ave., Buena Park, CA 90620. The meeting will begin promptly at 1:00pm and last for two hours.
