Swine Flu, Typhus, and West Nile Virus in Southland

SANTA ANA Calif. (FNP) – While the West Nile Virus ravages Texas this summer, there have been relatively few cases in Orange County. As of last week, the county health department said they have identified 10 cases in birds and only one case in humans.

The Vector Control District issued an alert for the Labor Day Weekend. The district is reminding residents to take precautions to reduce the possibility of mosquito bites. West Nile is transmitted through mosquitoes and the hot temperatures can reduce the time required for the developing eggs to become adults.

“Residents can help fight mosquitoes by identifying and dumping all stagnant water sources, or by reporting them to the OCVCD,” said OCVCD Board of Trustees President James Gomez. This is the time of year that human-cases begin to rise in California.

There have been 24 “positive” pools in Orange County. Most of the infected pools were in the north county. One bird case was discovered in the south county. There have been hundreds of cases in California with one death association with West Nile.

OC officials report that Endemic (murine) typhus cases continue to occur sporadically in Orange County.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said they identified a variant H3N2 influenza that has spread to several states. The H3N2 (H3N2v) is easily transmitted compared to other variants.

The influenza has spread, especially in the Southern Hemisphere, but can also spread in the United States during the summer months. The Health Department says doctors should consider anti-viral drugs like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza).
