Multivitamins Can Reduce Cancer Risk

Free News Press – Researchers in the United States found that men who take a multivitamin on a daily basis have a reduced risk for developing cancer. Although other studies have been less conclusive and even negative, this new research from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) suggests that taking a daily vitamin could work against cancer.

Lead author J. Michael Gaziano, MD, chief of the Division of Aging at BWH, says this is the first clinical trial to test the affects of multivitamins on a major disease such as cancer. “Despite the fact that more than one-third of Americans take multivitamins, their long-term effects were unknown until now.”

Another study last year suggested that taking some vitamins could increase the risk for death. But this new study, which involved 15,000 men over the age of 50, found that multivitamins were associated with a reduction in cancer deaths.

Gaziano said that the men self-reported their cancer diagnosis, but the researchers verified the diagnosis later. They found the group who took a daily multivitamin had an eight percent reduction in total cancer.

Other studies found that a diet high in vitamins can reduce cancer risk. “Many studies have suggested that eating a nutritious diet may reduce a man’s risk of developing cancer,” co-author Howard D. Sesso, ScD, an associate epidemiologist in the Division of Preventive Medicine at BWH, said

“Now we know that taking a daily multivitamin, in addition to addressing vitamin and mineral deficiencies, may also be considered in the prevention of cancer in middle-aged and older men.”

More studies need to be conducted to determine whether taking Centrum Silver and other multivitamins can reduce the risk in younger men and women. Researchers are also looking for an association between vitamins and cardiovascular disease.
