California Unemployment Rate Drops to 10.2 Percent

Free News Press – The Employment Development Department for the State of California said the state unemployment rate in September decreased to 10.2 percent from 10.6 percent in August. In Orange County, the unemployment rate is only 7.1 percent but in Los Angeles the rate is 10.2 percent.

On an unadjusted basis, the unemployment rate is only 9.7 percent. Marin County had the lowest rate at 5.8 percent while Yuba topped the list at 16.3 percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said that the national unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent, the lowest level since President Obama took office. California experienced one of the sharpest declines in September despite an increase of only 8,500 non-farm jobs. Nationwide there were 114,000 jobs created.

The federal survey used a smaller sample than the EDD to determine the rate, according to the EDD. The federal survey “estimates the number of Californians holding jobs in September was 16,457,000, an increase of 53,000 from August, and up 203,000 from the employment total in September of last year.”

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the EDD survey indicates there were only 8,500 jobs created in September. After breaking the jobs down into five categories, they found that the government sector saw the greatest decline, down 6,400 jobs. Over the last year, the number of government jobs decreased by 41,100 (-1.7%).

The EDD said there were 470,515 people receiving regular unemployment insurance benefits in September. This is down from 501,158 last month.
