Garden Grove first Orange County city to receive Purple Heart

GARDEN GROVE Calif. (FNP) – The city of Garden Grove is the first Orange County city to be designated as a Purple Heart City. One of only 20 cities in the state to be awarded this designation, the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) presented the acknowledgement at the city council meeting held on November 27 2012.

The Purple Heart, the oldest military award still given to members of the military, is given in the name of the President to those who were wounded or killed serving their country during a time of war. The award dates back to April 5, 1917 and is the successor to the Badge of Merit which was only issued to three soldiers in 1780.

The MOPH was established in 1932 and is the only service organization comprised only of combat veterans. The organization was created to foster goodwill and camaraderie among wounded veterans.

The city of Garden Grove was awarded the Purple Heart for their support of military personnel and the efforts of those serving. The goal of the MOPH is to promote patriotism.

The city was recently named the “City of the Year” by the national veteran’s organization, Forty & Eight.

In April 2012 the State of California became the first state to receive the Purple Heart Statue.
