Scam targets SCE customers

CYPRESS Calif. (FNP) – The City of Cypress and Southern California Edison (SCE) are warning residents that a new telephone scam is being perpetrated against customers of the electric utility.

Customers are called on the telephone and told their account is past due and to avoid a power disruption they needed to pay a balance immediately. The payment could be made via a prepaid cash card like PayPal or Green Dot, Mashi Nyssen tells Free News Press.

“We ask our customers to be alert to these calls that demand immediate payment and threaten service disconnection,” said Henry Martinez, SCE vice president of Safety, Security & Compliance. “Customers suspecting a fraudulent call should ask for the caller’s name, department and business phone number. If the caller refuses to provide this information, customers should terminate the call and report the incident immediately to local police or SCE at 800-655-4555,”

Nyssen also says that if an SCE employee arrives at your doorstep they will be able to provide identification. Customers are encouraged to ask for an ID which includes their representative’s department and phone number.

Call the police if anyone requests you to leave your residence. Nyssen says the homeowner or renter could be getting set up for a burglary. Be suspicious of anyone arriving without an appointment.
