Coyotes Spotted in Cypress

20130823_coyotes_cypressCYPRESS Calif. (FNP) The city of Cypress is warning residents that coyotes have been spotted in the urban areas of Orange County. Residents say they have spotted wild coyotes in the city near the corner of Bloomfield and Lincoln.

Although city officials said the coyotes do not need open space or wild areas to survive, residents near the Forest Lawn Cemetery tell Free News Press the Coyote Creek that runs along the border of Orange and Los Angeles Counties is an ideal habitat for the animals. Some animals may also reside in the cemetery.

Also known as the American jackal, brush wolf, or the prairie wolf, scientists believe the canine has been wandering the region since the Pleistocene epoch, some .81 million years ago, evolving along the dire wolf.

The coyote has been spotted in all areas of Orange County. There have been reports of attacks against domesticated animals, including dogs and cats. They have little fear of humans and are frequently seen by joggers and bikers.

Coyotes usually hunt between sunset and sunrise. Dogs and cats left in the backyard can be taken in a matter of moments. Even a backyard fence may not keep the animals out.

If an encounter becomes tense and the coyote behaves aggressively, this usually means you have probably gotten to close to its prey or family. “All children should be taught from a very early age to avoid strange animals, whether domestic or non-domestic”, the city said in their statement.
