Eleven years after the release of FromSoftware's beloved Gothic action RPG, Bloodborne is finally getting new life — just not in the form most fans expected. Sony Pictures has announced an animated movie adaptation of the game, developed in collaboration with popular YouTuber Seán "JackSepticEye" McLoughlin and Lyrical Animation. The film will carry an R-rating.

According to Screen Rant, the movie will be "very true" to the source material, following the unnamed Hunter as they unravel the blood curse plaguing the Victorian-inspired city of Yharnam. McLoughlin, who has a Hunter's Mark tattoo and has called Bloodborne his favorite game of all time, will serve as a producer but reportedly will not have direct input on the creative development.

The announcement has sharply divided the fanbase. Many had been holding out hope for a PC port or a full remaster from a studio like Bluepoint Games, which handled the acclaimed Demon's Souls remake. "Bluepoint Games isn't good enough to make a Bloodborne Remake, but 'JackSepticEye' is good enough to produce a Bloodborne film?" one frustrated fan wrote on social media. Others were more optimistic, with one Twitter user calling it potentially "the most beautiful nightmare ever or the hardest carry in animation history."

On Reddit's r/bloodborne, where McLoughlin personally shared the news, the post racked up over 1,000 comments in just six hours. The tone ranged from genuine excitement to sardonic disbelief. "We got a Bloodborne feature film before a 60 FPS patch," one user joked. Another simply asked if it was an elaborate April Fools' prank.

With both the Bloodborne movie and a separate Elden Ring film now in development, FromSoftware's dark fantasy worlds are clearly attracting serious Hollywood attention. Whether an animated adaptation can satisfy one of gaming's most passionate fanbases remains an open question.
