Before he was The Dude, Jeff Bridges was Lightfoot — a fast-talking young drifter thrown together with Clint Eastwood's stoic bank robber in "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot." The 1974 action comedy, which earned Bridges his second Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, is now available to stream on Prime Video.

The film was the directorial debut of Michael Cimino, who would go on to make "The Deer Hunter." As Collider noted, the pairing of Bridges and Eastwood — then at the peak of his Dirty Harry fame — was an unlikely one. Bridges had made his name in vulnerable indie performances, while Eastwood was known for grim, near-silent toughness. That contrast is precisely what makes the film crackle.

"Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" is often cited as a forerunner to the buddy-action genre that would later be popularized by "48 Hrs." and "Lethal Weapon." The story forces both characters outside their comfort zones: Lightfoot reckons with the consequences of life on the run, while Thunderbolt discovers a wry, self-aware side as he follows his partner's increasingly ambitious schemes.

Sitting at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds up as both an entertaining road caper and a surprisingly moving story about an unlikely friendship. For viewers who know Bridges primarily from "The Big Lebowski" or "Crazy Heart," it offers a fascinating look at the raw talent that launched one of Hollywood's most enduring careers.
