The Superman sequel officially starts production with a July 2027 release date and some very deliberate visual clues from its director.

The next chapter of the DC Universe is officially in front of cameras. Director James Gunn marked the first day of filming on *Man of Tomorrow*, the sequel to his 2025 hit *Superman*, with a social media post loaded with Easter eggs for eagle-eyed fans.

As Collider detailed, Gunn's Instagram photo prominently features a nametag reading "Luthor, A." from Van Kull Prison — the supermax facility where Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor was locked up at the end of the first film and later glimpsed in the second season of HBO Max's *Peacemaker*. A chess set sits nearby, a nod to the villain's trademark strategic genius. But the most revealing detail may be the clapboard visible in the background, which displays the film's logo for the first time: a fusion of Superman's iconic S-shield with the triple-circle symbol of Brainiac, the alien supervillain.

The Brainiac tease suggests Gunn is widening the scope of his Superman saga considerably. While Lex Luthor anchored the first film's human-scale villainy, Brainiac represents a cosmic-level threat — one of Superman's most formidable adversaries in the comics, known for shrinking and collecting entire cities.

*Man of Tomorrow* is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. With Gunn continuing to build the interconnected DC Universe he launched alongside producer Peter Safran, the sequel's production start signals that the franchise's ambitious expansion remains firmly on track.
