Victor Wembanyama announced his arrival on the NBA's biggest stage Sunday night. The San Antonio Spurs' franchise cornerstone poured in 35 points to lead his team past the Portland Trail Blazers 111-98 in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series.

The 35-point eruption marked the most ever scored by a Spurs player making his postseason debut, according to ESPN. In a franchise with a playoff legacy stretching from David Robinson to Tim Duncan to Kawhi Leonard, Wembanyama now owns a piece of that history before the series has even reached Game 2.

San Antonio controlled the game behind Wembanyama's dominance on both ends of the floor. The 7-foot-4 Frenchman, who transformed the Spurs from lottery regulars back into playoff contenders in just his third season, looked entirely unfazed by the heightened intensity of postseason basketball.

Portland will need to regroup quickly if the Trail Blazers hope to avoid falling into an early hole. Game 2 will test whether they can devise a defensive scheme capable of slowing down one of the most unique offensive threats the league has ever seen.
