A federal appeals court ruled Friday that the Trump administration's ban on asylum claims at the southern border is illegal, clearing the way for migrants to once again seek protection under U.S. law at the border and setting up a potential clash before the Supreme Court.

The ruling is a significant legal setback for the administration, which has made restricting immigration and asylum a central policy priority. The ban had blocked migrants from requesting asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border, a mechanism that has existed under federal law for decades.

The decision was reported by The Washington Post, NPR, CNN, and CBS News, among others. CNN noted the ruling sets up a possible Supreme Court showdown, while NPR described the appeals court as finding the asylum ban illegal outright.

The Trump administration is expected to appeal. If the case reaches the Supreme Court, it would be among the most consequential immigration rulings in years, touching on the scope of executive power over border enforcement and the reach of federal asylum statutes.
