Hong Kong International Airport is moving to raise $1.9 billion through a bond issuance, tapping into a local debt market that has expanded significantly over the past two years, Bloomberg reported. The airport authority's financing plan is one of the larger debt raises by a Hong Kong infrastructure entity in recent memory and reflects growing confidence in local capital markets as a funding source for major projects.

The airport, one of the busiest cargo hubs in the world and a major passenger gateway to Asia, has been investing heavily in expansion capacity. Its three-runway system, a multi-year infrastructure project, has required sustained capital investment, and debt markets have played a central role in funding the build-out alongside government support and operating revenues.

Hong Kong's local bond market has seen rising issuance activity, driven by policy efforts to deepen the city's capital markets and reduce reliance on offshore dollar-denominated funding. Infrastructure entities have been among the more active issuers, drawn by competitive rates and growing institutional demand from local insurers, pension funds, and asset managers seeking long-duration fixed income.

The timing of the deal comes as Hong Kong works to reinforce its position as a regional financial center. Debt issuance by large, creditworthy public entities like the airport authority helps build the yield curve and gives investors benchmarks against which other issuers can price their own bonds.

Specific details on the bond structure, tenor, and expected pricing were not immediately available. The deal is expected to attract strong demand given the airport authority's status as a major infrastructure operator with government backing.
