A vehicle loaded with explosive devices crashed into the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, Oregon, killing the driver and triggering a police investigation into what authorities are treating as a deliberate attack.

The driver was found dead in the car after it plowed into the building. Portland police discovered the explosives following the fiery, fatal crash, and closed the club while investigators worked the scene.

Court records show the suspected bomber had threatened members of the club for years before the attack, according to reporting by OregonLive. The nature of those threats and the history between the suspect and the club were outlined in documents connected to earlier legal proceedings.

The Multnomah Athletic Club, founded in 1891, is one of the oldest and largest private athletic and social clubs in the Pacific Northwest. The building is located in southwest Portland.

Portland police and bomb technicians responded to the scene. The club remained closed as the investigation continued.
