For the sixth consecutive year, Barcelona are in the Women's Champions League final.

Pere Romeu's side beat Bayern Munich 4-2 at Camp Nou on Sunday, completing a 5-3 aggregate victory in front of a sellout crowd of 60,021. Alexia Putellas scored twice and dropped to her knees at full time, arms outstretched toward the fans. Salma Paralluelo played what was described as her best game for the club. Ewa Pajor continued to justify her billing as one of Barcelona's shrewdest recent signings. Mapi Leon was commanding in defence. And Aitana Bonmati, the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, returned from five months out with injury.

The final will be against Lyon — a pairing that carries significant weight in the history of the women's game.

Barcelona's first Champions League final, years ago, was against the French club. They lost 4-1, and it wasn't particularly close. The defeat was formative. At the airport on the way home, the captains, led by Putellas, confronted then-coach Lluis Cortes directly: "What do we need to get there? We'll do whatever it takes." Cortes set the wheels in motion.

The club doubled down on preparation, raised physical standards, and within two years won their first Champions League title, beating Chelsea in 2021. The following year they reached the final again, again against Lyon, and lost again — this time in Turin, in a match closer than the first but still decisive enough to leave a mark. In 2023 they beat Wolfsburg 3-2, coming back from 2-0 down at half-time. That resilience carried them to Bilbao in 2024, where the stadium was filled with Barcelona fans.

They have now won three titles during their run of six consecutive final appearances, with seven total if counting the 2018-19 season.

But the victory over Bayern arrived alongside uncertainty. Three of the five standout performers on Sunday face unclear futures at the club. Putellas, Paralluelo, and Leon all have contract situations that remain unresolved, casting a shadow over the squad's composition heading into next season. The club has not publicly confirmed the details of those negotiations.

For now, the focus is on the final. Lyon have beaten Barcelona before and know exactly how to disrupt the way they play. This version of Barcelona is more experienced, more physically prepared, and deeper in talent than the side that lost 4-1 in their first meeting. But Lyon have never been an easy opponent, and the history between these clubs gives the match a dimension beyond any single season.

The final date has not been confirmed in the available reporting, but Barcelona will arrive having gone through one of their most complete performances of the European campaign on Sunday.
