Three games into the WNBA season, Dallas Wings head coach Jose Fernandez publicly called out his own players after a 90-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday night, telling reporters there is selfishness inside his locker room.
"It's real talk and it's accountability," Fernandez told reporters after the game. "That's what I told them. I know there's selfishness in this locker room. There is."
The comments were blunt and came early in a season where the Wings are still integrating new additions to the roster. Fernandez did not name any specific players, but the message was direct.
"You gotta look in the mirror and be accountable on how you played. And don't get upset if you think that you should have played more, or you didn't play enough, or you didn't get the shots that you think you should have gotten," he said. "Really good teams, they don't give a [expletive] about that. Know what they give a [expletive] about? Give a [expletive] about winning, because that's what matters."
Fernandez delivered the remarks at the close of his postgame press conference, according to Yahoo Sports.
Before joining Dallas, Fernandez spent 25 seasons as the head coach of the University of South Florida's women's basketball program, where he led the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. The Wings hired him in 2025.
The Wings fell to 0-3 through their first three games following the loss to Minnesota.
