Isaiah Thomas is returning to Boston, but this time he won't be suiting up.

The two-time Celtics star has joined the organization as a pro and college scout, according to a report by The Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach. Thomas, a Tacoma, Washington native, will be based in Seattle and focus on West Coast prospects, a region that has become a significant source of NBA draft talent.

The move comes shortly after the Celtics were eliminated from the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs in early May. Boston holds the No. 27 and No. 40 picks in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft, and President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has made clear that adding to the roster is a priority.

Thomas, who stands 5-foot-9, has wasted little time getting started in the new role. He attended the NBA Combine this week in Chicago and has already been talking with potential draftees, according to Yahoo Sports. While the transition from player to front office is a new chapter for Thomas, his engagement this week in Chicago suggests he has embraced it quickly.

The hiring caps what has been a winding road back to the Celtics for the veteran point guard. Other NBA franchises considered adding Thomas as a player as recently as last year, when he played in the G League and logged minutes with the Phoenix Suns in 2024.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla spoke warmly about Thomas last December when the former star made an appearance at a Celtics game.

"He's done so much for the city and really for the organization," Mazzulla told Celtics Wire. "When you're a high-character guy, people appreciate you and you're able to leave the place a little better than you found it."

Thomas played two seasons with Boston and was an All-Star during both, becoming one of the most beloved players in recent franchise history. His 2016-17 season, in which he averaged 28.9 points per game despite playing through a hip injury and personal tragedy, remains one of the most memorable individual campaigns in Celtics history.

The Celtics' first-round exit this spring marked the end of a difficult postseason stretch for a team that won the NBA title in 2024. Stevens has been vocal about rebuilding depth around the core roster, and the draft picks Boston holds at 27 and 40 will be central to that effort.

Thomas, now in his mid-30s, appears to be transitioning out of his playing career entirely. His new scouting role keeps him connected to the game in a different capacity, and his West Coast base puts him close to some of the country's most active recruiting and development circuits.

The Celtics' 2026 NBA Draft picks are in the late first round and early second round, slots that typically yield contributors rather than stars. Stevens has emphasized finding players who can add value to the rotation, and Thomas's familiarity with the league and its culture may help Boston evaluate prospects at that level of the draft more effectively.
