Maricopa County in Arizona has announced a partnership with Cartwheel, a mental health telehealth service, with the goal of reaching 50,000 children, according to a report by KTAR News 92.3 FM. The partnership is intended to expand access to mental health care for young people in the region through remote services delivered via telehealth platforms.

The announcement reflects a broader push across the country to address a recognized shortage of youth mental health services. Telehealth has become an increasingly common tool for reaching children in areas where in-person providers are scarce or where families face logistical barriers to attending appointments.

In Memphis, a separate but related development is taking shape. A new youth mental health center is scheduled to open June 1, according to Action News 5. The center is expected to provide direct mental health services to young people in the Memphis area, adding capacity to a region where demand for such services has grown.

Meanwhile, a school in western Massachusetts found a lower-tech approach to student mental health. Pathfinder, a vocational school, has been using baby farm animals to support students emotionally, according to Western Mass News. The program gives students regular interaction with young animals as a way to reduce stress and build a sense of connection and responsibility.

Taken together, the three initiatives reflect different strategies communities are using to address youth mental health needs, from large-scale telehealth contracts and new brick-and-mortar facilities to hands-on animal programs at the school level. The Maricopa County and Cartwheel partnership does not yet have a confirmed start date for when all 50,000 targeted children would be enrolled in services.
