The Beaches musical is closing on Broadway after fewer than 70 total performances and no Tony Award nominations, with its final show set for May 24 at the Majestic Theatre in New York.

According to a report by Variety, the production ran just 28 previews and 38 regular performances after opening on April 22. Ticket sales were not strong enough to cover production costs, and reviews were mixed. The show received no nominations when Tony nominations were announced, a blow that effectively sealed its fate.

The musical is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Iris Rainer Dart and follows the lifelong friendship of two women from very different backgrounds. Jessica Vosk and Kelli Barrett star as Cee Cee Bloom and Bertie White, respectively. The cast also includes Sarah Bockel, Harper Burns, Eric Coles, Taylor Sage Evans, Mia Gerachis, Zeya Grace, Joelle Gully, Ben Jacoby, Stephanie Martignetti, Emma Ogea, Olive Ross-Kline, Bailey Ryon, Paul Adam Schaefer, Samantha Schwartz, Brent Thiessen, Lael Van Keuren and Zurin Villanueva. The show is co-directed by Lonny Price and Matt Cowart.

Producer Jennifer Maloney-Prezioso issued a statement about the closing. "Bringing a new musical to Broadway is always an enormous undertaking, and we are deeply proud of this company who created a production filled with heart, humanity, humor and emotional truth," she said. "Night after night, audiences have laughed, cried, called their friends on the way out of the theater, and connected deeply with this story of friendship and love. That impact is real, and it will stay with people long after the final curtain. We are profoundly grateful to everyone who helped bring Beaches to life at the Majestic Theatre, and look forward to sharing this special show with audiences across America on our national tour."

That national tour is already in the planning stages. Producers announced that Beaches will launch a tour across the United States in 2027, meaning the production will continue to reach audiences even after its Broadway run ends.

Previews for Beaches began on March 27, giving the show roughly eight weeks of total performances before its closure. Producers on the project include Maloney-Prezioso, Ryan Bogner and Tracey McFarland for Broadway and Beyond Theatricals, Alison Spiriti and Justin Sudds for Right Angle Entertainment, and Douglas McJannet for Arden Entertainment.

The production had been at the Majestic Theatre, one of Broadway's most storied venues and the longtime home of The Phantom of the Opera, which ran there for 35 years before its own closing in 2023.
