Julia Roberts is set to star in and produce a film adaptation of Katy Hays' forthcoming novel "Home Economics" for Sony's 3000 Pictures, according to The Wrap.
Roberts will produce through her banner Red Om Films alongside partners Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill. Wicked producer Marc Platt is also producing on behalf of Marc Platt Productions. Hays herself is set to adapt her own novel for the screen and will executive produce.
The book has not yet been published, and both the novel's plot and the film's storyline are being kept under wraps. "Home Economics" sold in a highly competitive publishing auction and landed at Pamela Dorman Books, an imprint of Viking Penguin at Penguin Random House, with a 2027 publication date. The book has also sold in 11 international territories.
Hays is a New York Times best-selling author known for her debut novel "The Cloisters" and her follow-up "Saltwater," which is currently on the Times best-seller list. Jake Bauman and the Sony Literary team were credited with bringing the project to 3000 Pictures. Elizabeth Gabler and Aislinn Dunster will oversee for the studio.
Roberts most recently starred in Luca Guadagnino's "After the Hunt" at Amazon MGM Studios. Her next film is Sam Esmail's "Panic Carefully" at Warner Bros., which is scheduled for a theatrical release on February 26, 2027.
Deadline first reported the deal.
