J Balvin did not need special guests or a dramatic reinvention to close out the first night of Sueños Music Festival 2026. He had the catalog.
The Colombian superstar headlined Saturday night's lineup at Chicago's Grant Park, delivering a one-hour set that moved through his career with the steadiness of an artist who knows exactly where he stands. According to Billboard, Balvin took the stage at 9 p.m. local time wearing classic tan Dickies and a yellow jacket.
Songs like "Ginza," which helped push Colombian reggaeton deeper into the global mainstream in 2015, landed with immediate crowd recognition. Later in the set, Balvin called on the audience to put their phones in the air before launching into "La Canción."
Some of the most resonant moments came between songs. With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, Balvin encouraged fans to embrace the person next to them, a gesture consistent with his history of speaking openly about anxiety and depression. He also gave a shout-out to immigrants "who are fighting day by day," drawing one of the loudest responses of the night.
For "Que Calor," Balvin removed the yellow jacket to reveal a white tank top. By the final stretch of the set, he tore that open as well. The physical theatrics fit naturally into a performance that never seemed to strain for effect.
Dancers backed him throughout, and the crowd met him at nearly every word.
The Saturday lineup also included Kali Uchis, Paulo Londra, Danny Ocean, Manuel Turizo, and others. Sueños continues Sunday with sets from Ryan Castro, Yandel, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, and Fuerza Regida, among others.
Earlier this month, Balvin and Ryan Castro released a joint album called Omerta. He was also recently announced as part of the performer lineup for the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.
