Filming on The Diplomat season 4 is nearly done, and the final stretch will take place in Florence, Italy.
Allison Janney, who plays President Grace Penn on the Netflix political thriller, gave the update in an interview with Screen Rant. "We're in the middle of filming it right now," she said. "We have two more episodes to finish this season. Debora Cahn is so brilliant, and it's not going to disappoint. It's a lot of fun [to act] with Brad Whitford, and we get to go places. Like, I think I'm gonna go shoot in Florence now for the last two episodes, and it's really exciting."
Janney was promoted to a series regular ahead of season 4, as were Bradley Whitford, who plays First Gentleman Todd Penn, and Nana Mensah, who plays White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah.
Season 3 ended on a sharp turn. Ambassador Kate Wyler, played by Keri Russell, discovers that her husband Hal, now Vice President of the United States, and President Grace Penn manipulated UK Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge and secretly obtained a nuclear device called the Poseidon for themselves. The couple had convinced Trowbridge to agree to submerge the weapon in concrete, but took it instead.
That betrayal is expected to sit at the center of season 4. With Grace holding Poseidon and Hal having deceived Kate, the season appears set to push the consequences of both relationships to a breaking point.
The Diplomat has aired in October for each of its past two seasons. If that pattern holds, season 4 could arrive in October 2026, though the timing of the final production push could push the release back.
No official premiere date has been announced.
