Lucky is in love, and it is complicated. The second season of Deli Boys, the critically acclaimed Hulu comedy, dropped all six episodes on May 28, and much of the season revolves around the romantic entanglements of Lucky, played by Poorna Jagannathan.

According to Variety, the season opens with Lucky and her charges Mir and Raj successfully running the DarCo cocaine business. Their success creates a new problem: finding somewhere to launder the money. That problem brings in Max Sugar, played by Fred Armisen, a casino magnate and money launderer who becomes interested in Lucky early on. She initially resists, but after Max intervenes during a robbery at the deli, she agrees to go out with him.

"Lucky loves toxic, and she knows toxic when she sees toxic," Jagannathan said. "She's met her match in Max Sugar."

Max is not Lucky's only romantic complication this season. Kumail Nanjiani guest stars as Danyal, a shady lawyer brought in to help free Raj from prison after he is accused of blowing up a character named Ahmad. Danyal and Lucky have a history together that predates the events of the series. His handling of Raj's case leads Lucky to deliver a line in Urdu that was written by cast member Saagar Shaikh.

"It's, 'Shakal dekh ke chod diya, akal dekh ke chhod diya,' which is, 'I fucked you because of your looks, and I left you because of your brains,'" she said.

The season eventually reveals that Max is willing to sell out Lucky and the boys to a district attorney named Andrew Chadwater, played by Andrew Rannells, who is also running for mayor. When Lucky finds out, she wants to kill Max. The boys persuade her toward a different plan: take down Max, seize control of the casino, and get Chadwater under their thumb.

"She finally understands that these two boys are the closest things to family she'll ever have," Jagannathan said. "They depend on her, but she's beginning to depend on them as well, and they have really stepped up time and time again. They've never betrayed her, and everyone else really has. She's settling into this three-unit a little more comfortably than she's ever been, because she was so close to giving it away."

The season also pulls back on the graphic violence that defined season 1. Jagannathan said that shift was a deliberate decision made by the creative team.

All six episodes of Deli Boys Season 2 are streaming now on Hulu.
