Doctor Who fans will be waiting longer than expected. According to a report from Collider, the BBC's planned 2026 Christmas special for the long-running science fiction series is now expected to move to Easter 2027.

The report cites a new story from The Sun, which sourced an insider close to the production. The BBC has not officially confirmed the delay.

The central problem, according to the insider account, is casting. Finding a new actor to play the 16th Doctor has proven difficult, with the appeal of the role diminished following what many have described as a controversial recent era for the show. "There are fears that even if they do manage to pull something together, it is going to be a poor cousin to previous Christmas specials, which have always been adored by fans," the report read.

The current situation follows a turbulent stretch for the franchise. When the BBC partnered with Disney to bring in showrunner Russell T. Davies for a new era of the show, it was widely seen as a major statement of intent. Instead, the partnership collapsed, and Ncuti Gatwa's run as the Time Lord came to an end last year, sooner than many had anticipated.

After months of uncertainty following Gatwa's departure, Kate Phillips, chief content officer at the BBC, confirmed that "Doctor Who is going nowhere," and stated that "going forward, with or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC." Davies then appeared to confirm a Christmas 2026 return, going as far as to say that the script he delivered left BBC bosses "with jaws agape, loving it."

Despite that apparent momentum, the search for a new lead has stalled the production. The Easter 2027 window would give the BBC additional time to secure casting and allow Davies to revise a script that was apparently written with the Christmas holiday setting in mind.

No official announcement on casting or a revised air date has come from the BBC as of this writing.
