The Boys ended its run on Prime Video with a wave of online criticism and record-breaking viewership at the same time. According to Screen Rant, season 5 accumulated 57 million viewers in 39 days, making it the most-watched installment in the show's history on the platform.
That number sits in tension with how loudly parts of the audience pushed back. The final two episodes of the series were the lowest-rated in the show's history on IMDb, and complaints about pacing, a heavy focus on setting up the Vought Rising spinoff, and what some described as misleading advertising circulated widely.
The Boys first arrived on Prime Video in 2019. Over seven seasons it became popular enough to launch two spinoff series, with two more currently in development. Season 4 had already received its share of criticism before the final season aired, creating significant pressure on the conclusion to deliver.
The divided reaction to season 5 was not mild. Criticisms extended to the political commentary woven through the show, the overall quality of the writing, and what some viewers saw as the series drifting from its original premise. By that point, those concerns had been building for more than one season.
Still, the viewership numbers suggest those frustrations did not translate into audiences abandoning the show. Viewers who had stuck with The Boys through its fourth season largely chose to see it through to the end, and the noise surrounding the finale may have drawn in additional eyes rather than driving them away.
High viewership does not settle questions about creative quality, and The Boys is not the first show to pair a poorly received final season with strong streaming numbers.
