Montana has secured federal funding to establish a network of behavioral health clinics across the state, according to an announcement from the State of Montana Newsroom. Governor Greg Gianforte made the announcement, which involves a program designed to expand access to mental health and substance use treatment in underserved areas.

The funding comes through a federal program that supports certified community behavioral health clinics, known as CCBHCs. These clinics are required to provide a broad range of services, including crisis care, mental health treatment, substance use disorder treatment, and primary care coordination. The model is designed to ensure that patients can access multiple types of care in one place rather than navigating separate systems.

Montana has long faced challenges in providing mental health care to its residents. The state is geographically large and sparsely populated, and many rural communities lack consistent access to psychiatrists, therapists, or crisis services. Long drives to distant providers, combined with workforce shortages, have left many Montanans without adequate care.

The CCBHC model has been expanding nationally as states look for ways to address gaps in behavioral health services. Clinics that receive the designation are held to specific quality standards and are reimbursed at rates intended to make the full range of required services financially sustainable. Proponents argue the model works better than the fragmented system many states currently rely on.

Governor Gianforte framed the funding as a step toward addressing a recognized need. The clinics, once established, are expected to serve patients regardless of their ability to pay, and to offer services seven days a week with extended hours. Crisis services would be available around the clock.

The state will now move forward with the process of designating and opening clinic sites. Officials have not yet announced specific locations, but the goal is to reach communities where behavioral health services are currently limited or unavailable.
