For the first time at Roland Garros, neither the men's nor the women's singles draw has a single former champion still competing. Iga Swiatek's fourth-round loss on Sunday was the last to go, ending the Polish player's run on her 25th birthday.

According to BBC Sport, Swiatek was beaten by Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, the 15th seed, who has won all 16 of her clay-court matches this season. Kostyuk came into Paris having already won titles in Rouen and Madrid.

Swiatek, who won three consecutive Roland Garros titles between 2022 and 2024 and was known as the Queen of Clay, has been dealing with a crisis of confidence. After the loss she said: "I know that I lost because I was tense, and my body couldn't really do the proper things. But it's not the first time, as well, so I just need to work on it."

Kostyuk, 23, spoke about her own consistency after the win. "Things change in tennis, but I'm much more consistent. I'm the most consistent I have ever been in my career," she said. She added that she still feels she has a "long way" to go to crack the top five or top 10.

Kostyuk's next match is an all-Ukrainian quarter-final against seventh seed Elina Svitolina. On the other side of their section of the draw, 36-year-old Romanian Sorana Cirstea plays Russian eighth seed Mirra Andreeva. BBC Sport noted that a first-time Grand Slam finalist is guaranteed to come from that part of the bracket.

On the other side of the women's draw, top seed Aryna Sabalenka remains the standout contender. She is looking to win the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen for the first time. Naomi Osaka and American 19th seed Madison Keys, who won the 2025 Australian Open, could stand in her path. None of the other remaining players in the women's draw have ever reached a Grand Slam semi-final.

The men's draw also has no former Grand Slam champions left. Top seed Jannik Sinner had been widely expected to win the title, but his path is no longer clear. The tournament is now guaranteed to produce a first-time Grand Slam winner on both the men's and women's sides.
