State health officials in Colorado say measles may be spreading through Delta County without being detected, according to a report by Denver7. The warning suggests that confirmed cases may represent only a portion of actual infections in the area.

Health officials said the virus could be circulating among residents who have not been tested or whose symptoms have not been connected to a measles diagnosis. Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that spreads through the air and can remain infectious on surfaces or in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a space.

Undetected spread is a concern public health officials take seriously because measles can cause severe complications, particularly in young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Complications can include pneumonia, brain swelling, and in rare cases, death.

Measles was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000, but outbreaks have continued to occur, typically linked to travelers bringing the virus from other countries and to communities with lower vaccination rates. The measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, known as the MMR vaccine, is considered highly effective. Two doses provide roughly 97% protection against the virus.

Delta County is a rural county in western Colorado. Health officials have not released specific case counts in the Denver7 report, but the language around undetected spread points to concern that transmission chains may be difficult to trace.

Officials have urged residents who experience symptoms consistent with measles, including high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a spreading rash, to contact a health provider before going in person to a clinic or emergency room, to avoid potentially exposing others.

The situation in Delta County is part of a broader national trend. Measles cases across the United States have risen in recent years, and public health agencies have repeatedly pointed to declining vaccination rates as a contributing factor. Health officials continue to recommend that residents check their vaccination records and consult a doctor if they are unsure of their status.
