Capcom has set a release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The new entry in the long-running action series will launch on September 25, 2026, with preorders now open and a playable demo available on PlayStation 5.
The announcement came during Sony’s latest State of Play showcase, where Capcom showed a new trailer focused on the game’s swordplay, supernatural powers, and early Edo-period Kyoto setting. The game follows Miyamoto Musashi, who gains the power of the Oni and is drawn into a violent conflict against the Genma, monstrous enemies that have overrun the historic city.
The latest trailer highlights Mount Oe, a Kyoto mountain range tied to history and legend. In Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the area has been seized by a powerful Genma who claims to be Shuten Doji, the legendary Oni. Capcom presents the location as both a natural landmark and a mythic battleground, giving Musashi another dangerous stage on his path through a demon-infested Kyoto.
Combat remains the center of the game. Capcom is emphasizing swordplay built around weight, timing, and impact, with battles designed to make each strike feel forceful. Players will be able to parry, deflect, use the series’ signature Issen critical attack, absorb souls, and draw on Oni-powered techniques during combat.
One of the newly detailed systems is the Reflex Combo. By repeatedly dodging enemy attacks, players fill a Reflex Dodge gauge. Once the gauge is full, Musashi can unleash a powerful counterattack sequence. The system appears designed to reward players who stay close to danger and rely on precision instead of simply backing away from enemy pressure.
The demo offers about 30 minutes from the early part of the story. It lets players test several of the game’s core systems, including Parry, Deflect, Issen, Oni Armament, and soul absorption. The demo is set in the Kiyomizu-dera Temple stage and ends with a battle against Musashi’s rival, Sasaki Ganryu.
Progress from the demo will not transfer to the full game. However, players who keep save data from the demo will receive the Charm: Kubi Akari in the full version, giving Musashi a helpful effect once the game launches.
Capcom also detailed the game’s preorder bonuses and editions. Standard preorder bonuses include the Charm: Lion Dog, which gives Musashi a buff, and Sword Appearance: Sealed Curse, which changes the look of his weapon.
The Deluxe Edition includes the base game and a Deluxe Kit with additional charms, an outfit, and weapon or appearance skins. The Premium Deluxe Edition includes the Deluxe Kit along with a Premium Kit featuring outfits for allies, more appearance skins, and an in-game digital soundtrack. Players who preorder the Deluxe Edition or Premium Deluxe Edition will also receive extra charm and sword appearance content in addition to the standard preorder bonuses.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks a major return for Capcom’s samurai action series. With its mix of historical Kyoto, legendary Oni mythology, monstrous Genma enemies, and timing-focused sword combat, the game appears to be positioning itself as both a revival of the franchise and a modern action title built around aggressive, cinematic duels.
