La Sorsa, who never appeared in a game for Pittsburgh, was traded after triggering an upward mobility clause in his minor league deal.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded left-handed reliever Joe La Sorsa to the Boston Red Sox, according to a report that first appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh.

MLB insider Ari Alexander first reported Thursday evening that Pittsburgh dealt La Sorsa to Boston. The Boston Globe's Alex Spier confirmed the trade and reported that Pittsburgh is receiving cash considerations in return. La Sorsa was set to be in New York and on Boston's 26-man active roster by Friday.

The move came after La Sorsa triggered an upward mobility clause in his minor league deal. That type of clause requires the signing team to either offer the player a roster spot or make him available to all 29 other teams in the league. La Sorsa first triggered the clause at the end of spring training, but no team claimed him at that point, leaving him in Triple-A. The Red Sox later showed interest, which led to the trade.

La Sorsa has appeared in 46 career games out of the bullpen and carries a 1-1 record with a 5.21 ERA. He made his MLB debut in 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays in two games, then appeared in 23 games with the Washington Nationals. In 2024, he appeared in 14 games while remaining in Washington's organization. He signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 2025 and appeared in just five major league games before signing a minor league deal with Pittsburgh in November.

Despite being in the Pirates' organization all season, La Sorsa was never called up to the MLB roster before Thursday's trade.
