Square Enix has officially named the third and final game in its Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. The title is Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, and it will launch in Spring 2027, timed to the 30th anniversary of the original game.
The announcement came Friday at the Summer Game Fest event held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, according to Variety. Voice actor Matthew Mercer appeared onstage and confirmed he will reprise his role as Vincent Valentine, a character he first voiced in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
The game will release simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.
Square Enix described the game's story in detail. Cloud Strife and his companions face a world on the brink of total destruction. Their enemy Sephiroth is described as nearing godhood, and the group is racing to stop Meteor, which the company calls "the ultimate destructive magic." The party travels aboard the airship Highwind and will be able to explore what the company described as the entire planet, including new areas not seen in previous entries.
Two characters confirmed in the party are Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind. The game will also introduce a new job system for combat.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi addressed fans directly in a press release. "I'm beyond excited to announce 'Final Fantasy VII: Revelation,' launching simultaneously across all platforms in Spring 2027," he said. "I'm truly grateful to our fans who believed in this story and supported us for so many years. In this title, centered around 'resolve,' Cloud and his companions will confront their respective convictions and continue their journey towards the final battle that will determine the planet's fate. All the stories and emotions accumulated over the years will culminate in the most satisfying way with this experience, brought to you as the series' final chapter. Please look forward to it."
The original Final Fantasy VII was released in 1997 and became one of the most influential role-playing games ever made. Square Enix began the remake project with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020, followed by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The third title brings the story to its conclusion.
