The Ohio High School Athletic Association state track and field meet is in its final stretch this weekend at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. According to Yahoo Sports, Division I and II competitors hit the track for the first time on Saturday, June 6, with Division III running finals scheduled for the evening session.
Division I and II running finals will close out the meet on Sunday, June 7.
Among the Greater Akron area athletes competing Saturday, several carry strong individual credentials. In Division II boys competition, Ellet's Trey Carter is entered in the 100, 200, and long jump. St. Vincent-St. Mary's DeCarlo Prince is also in the 100 and 200. Nordonia's Kamryn Wadsworth entered three individual events for the Division II girls, running the 100, 200, and 400.
Walsh Jesuit has one of the largest contingents in the meet. On the boys side, the Warriors entered Jack Garner and Michael Heaberlin both in the 400, along with Zach Salata in the high jump, Sam Barrett in the long jump, and Curt Courtad in the pole vault. Walsh Jesuit also entered relay teams in the 800, 400, and 1,600.
Saturday's schedule begins at 9:30 a.m. with Division I running semifinals and Division III field events. Division II running semifinals are set for 2 p.m. The Division III running finals begin at 5:46 p.m.
Field events for Division II run throughout the afternoon, with discus, long jump, shot put, and high jump beginning at 12:30 p.m. and pole vault for Division I girls starting at 3:30 p.m.
Highland's Katie Schuler is entered in both the 1,600 and 3,200 for Division II girls. Tallmadge's Makayla Martuccio is also doubled in those two distance events. On the boys side, Revere's Will Wells entered the 1,600 and 800.
Hudson sent a large delegation as well. For boys, Reno Ferri is in the 100, Adam Butina in the 300 hurdles, and Drake Vander Cica in both the discus and shot put. For girls, Katelyn Will runs the 1,600, Madeline Meacham competes in the discus, and Makenna Bode is entered in the pole vault.
