The horror film Backrooms crossed $212.6 million worldwide in just ten days, making it the highest grossing movie in A24's history. According to a report by Deadline, the film unseated Marty Supreme, the Timothée Chalamet-starring drama that had previously held the record with a final global total of $191.2 million.

The film's second weekend in North America brought in an estimated $25.9 million, a steep 68% drop from its opening. Still, the domestic cumulative total reached $135 million, with international markets adding another $77.6 million. The drop was largely attributed to the film's heavily fan-driven audience, with 81% of second-weekend ticket buyers under the age of 35.

Backrooms was directed by Kane Parsons, whose project originated from a viral internet property. The film was co-financed with Chernin Entertainment and cost under $10 million to produce. For a studio known for prestige fare and awards contenders, the speed of this record is notable. It took the Josh Safdie-directed Marty Supreme 53 days to unseat A24's previous record holder, the multi-Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, which finished at $147.9 million worldwide.

Internationally, the film posted strong numbers across multiple markets. It ranked first in Spain by a wide margin with $2 million over the weekend, and posted the best opening weekend results for an A24 title in both Malaysia and the Philippines. In Latin America, it became A24's highest grossing title ever with $24.2 million cumulative. In the UK, it was not only the best A24 opening weekend but also the best horror opening of the year so far, with a $3 million weekend and a total of $11.6 million in the territory.

South Korea showed particularly strong legs, dropping only 11% in its second weekend, finishing at $5.7 million total, a record for any A24 title in the country. In Australia and New Zealand combined, the film passed Marty Supreme to become A24's highest grossing title with $7.9 million to date.

Meanwhile, Focus Features' Obsession, from YouTube genre content creator Curry Barker, reached $224.6 million worldwide, becoming the Universal Classic label's highest grossing film ever, surpassing the 2019 film Downton Abbey.

Backrooms continues its run in theaters globally.
