Norwich Tech junior Kyle Stringer won The Norwich Bulletin Athlete of the Week award for the week of May 25 to June 1, according to Yahoo Sports. Stringer was the winning pitcher in the Warriors' 6-1 victory over Wolcott Tech in the CTC baseball tournament championship game.
In that championship game, Stringer allowed just one run and struck out three over 5.1 innings. He also went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs at the plate.
Stringer had already put together a dominant outing in the semifinal round. He was the winning pitcher in Norwich Tech's 12-2 win over Wilcox Tech in the CTC semifinals, throwing four innings with zero hits, zero runs, three strikeouts, and one walk.
Now voting is open for the Bulletin's Athlete of the Week for the week of June 2 to 6. The nominees cover softball, boys outdoor track and field, girls outdoor track and field, and boys golf across Eastern Connecticut. Voting closes at 5 p.m. on Friday.
The nominees include Zachary Blanchard of Killingly, who won a four-way playoff to claim the ECC boys golf tournament individual championship after shooting a 73. Blanchard helped Killingly finish tied for second with Waterford in the team competition.
Tyler Hollis of Norwich Free Academy also shot a 73 in that same four-way playoff, finishing as runner-up. Hollis helped NFA win their second straight ECC team championship. He also shot a 5-under-par 32 to earn medalist honors in a tri-match against East Catholic and Killingly at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron.
In track and field, Tycen LaBelle of Griswold won the boys 3200-meter run at the State Open championship meet with a personal best time of 9 minutes and 14.40 seconds. Nevaeh Dailey of Plainfield finished runner-up in the girls discus at the State Open with a throw of 134 feet, 9 inches. Her Plainfield teammate Kaegan Hirst placed sixth in the boys high jump with a jump of 6 feet, 4 inches.
Peter Hoagland, a sophomore at Norwich Tech, shot an 81 to lead the Warriors to their second straight CTC boys golf tournament championship. Hoagland also won the two-man best ball competition alongside teammate Luke Henderson.
In softball, Norwich Free Academy senior Aubrey Martin had three hits, including a game-winning suicide squeeze bunt, to give NFA a 1-0 walk-off win over Newtown in the second round of the Class LL girls softball state tournament.
Voting for the June 2-6 Athlete of the Week is open now and closes at 5 p.m. Friday.
