Manchester United released Jadon Sancho with a brief one-line statement, grouping him with departing players Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia. The club thanked all three for their contributions and wished them well. There was no mention of the circumstances that had defined Sancho's time at Old Trafford, according to BBC Sport.

United opted not to activate an extra year's option on Sancho's contract, the move coming 12 months after Chelsea had paid a 5 million pound penalty clause rather than convert his loan into a permanent transfer.

Sancho had described his 73 million pound move from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021 as "a dream come true." The reality turned out differently. His last appearance at Old Trafford came on August 26, 2023, as a second-half substitute in a comeback victory over Nottingham Forest. In total he made 30 Premier League appearances for the club, completing the full 90 minutes on only 10 occasions.

He spent the final two and a half years of his time at United on loan at three different clubs: Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and Aston Villa. Along the way he played in the final of all three European club competitions across three consecutive seasons, one final with each club.

The most public episode of his United tenure was a falling-out with manager Erik ten Hag. That dispute contributed to his extended absence from the squad and set the tone for how his time at the club would ultimately be remembered.

Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe addressed the financial burden Sancho's contract placed on the club in a March 2025 interview with BBC Sport. "Sancho now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages. We're paying £17m to buy him in the summer," Ratcliffe said.

Before he signed with United, Sancho had one of the best seasons of his career at Dortmund in 2020-21. He scored 16 goals and added 20 assists in 38 matches in all competitions. He was selected for England's European Championship squad that summer, a tournament that ended with England losing to Italy in a penalty shootout. Sancho missed his spot kick and, along with Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford, faced racist abuse afterward. One man was later sent to prison as a result.

At United, Sancho managed 12 goals and six assists across 79 appearances in all competitions. He never came close to replicating the form that made him one of the most sought-after young players in Europe.
