Violence broke out Thursday outside the 2026 World Cup opening ceremony in Mexico City as anti-government protesters clashed with riot police in front of Estadio Azteca. Inside the stadium, pop star Shakira was performing for fans and FIFA executives during the official festivities.
According to Fox News, protesters hurled objects at security forces, who responded with batons and shields. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation as heavily armed officers struggled to control a growing crowd. During the chaos, a man reportedly suffered a heart attack. Emergency medical personnel faced delays reaching the victim because of the unrest surrounding them.
The protesters raised concerns about multiple issues. Demonstrators demanded government accountability for what they called "the disappeared," referring to the roughly 130,000 people reported missing across Mexico. They also pointed to cartel violence and widespread poverty. Many residents view the billions of dollars spent on hosting the World Cup as money that should have gone toward those problems instead.
The 2026 tournament is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With tens of thousands of fans expected to attend matches throughout the competition, the opening-day unrest immediately drew attention to security preparations at venues across all three countries.
As of Thursday evening, neither FIFA nor local organizing officials had released a statement on the number of injuries or possible arrests from the clashes.
The situation outside the stadium came just days after soccer matches in Mexico were postponed following the killing of cartel leader known as El Mencho near one of the World Cup host cities. The combination of events is expected to keep pressure on organizers and Mexican authorities as the monthlong tournament continues.
