Twenty North Alabama Softball Players Named to Alabama All-State Team

Lawrence County's McKinley McCaghren and Austin's Arden Breedlove earned the top individual honors after standout seasons that helped their programs reach the state tournament.

Twenty softball players from the Decatur, Alabama area earned spots on the Alabama Sportswriters Association All-State team this year, capping a strong postseason run for local programs. Eleven teams from The Decatur Daily's coverage area advanced to the regional tournament, and seven reached the state tournament. Lawrence County won the program's first-ever state championship in softball.

Leading the individual honors were Austin's Arden Breedlove and Lawrence County's McKinley McCaghren. Breedlove was named Class 7A hitter of the year after batting .589 with 98 RBIs, 89 runs scored, 27 home runs, 32 stolen bases, and 71 walks. McCaghren took Class 5A player of the year honors after going 27-2 in the circle with four saves, a 1.84 ERA, and 185 strikeouts. Lawrence County coach Josh Graham was named Class 5A coach of the year.

McCaghren was not the only standout from the state champion Lawrence County squad. Ava Templeton earned first-team outfielder recognition after hitting .444 with 68 runs scored, 30 RBIs, and 29 stolen bases. Bella Cross was a first-team utility selection, batting .393 with 66 RBIs and 10 home runs while also posting a 12-5 pitching record with a 2.25 ERA and 109 strikeouts. Alivia Templeton earned second-team outfielder honors with a .398 average, 62 runs scored, 43 RBIs, and 31 stolen bases.

Austin placed two players on the team alongside Breedlove. Charlie Barnes was a second-team outfielder with a .403 average, 66 RBIs, 49 runs scored, and 28 stolen bases.

Athens had four selections. Linsley Gillman earned first-team outfielder honors after hitting .503 with 74 stolen bases, 73 runs scored, and 49 RBIs. Abby Lopez was a second-team infielder with a .455 average, 63 RBIs, 43 runs scored, and seven home runs. Caitlyn Tedford was a second-team outfielder at .401 with 67 runs scored, 66 stolen bases, and 50 RBIs. Lexie Thornton received honorable mention at designated hitter.

Hartselle contributed five players to the list. RC Wolf earned first-team outfielder recognition after hitting .478 with 64 runs scored, 61 RBIs, 21 stolen bases, and 13 home runs. Katie Norgard was a first-team designated hitter at .447 with 72 RBIs, 67 runs scored, and 22 home runs. Abigail Kubica was a second-team pitcher with a 16-2 record, three saves, a 2.20 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP, and 104 strikeouts. Hatsumi Peterson was a second-team catcher at .415 with 54 RBIs and 11 home runs. Amelia Fox received honorable mention at infield.

From Class 5A, Ardmore's Payton Pennington was a first-team outfielder after hitting .433 with 62 runs scored, 45 stolen bases, and 33 RBIs. Fallon Broadway earned second-team infielder honors with a .422 average, 51 RBIs, and 36 runs scored. East Limestone's Kailey Matthews was a second-team outfielder after hitting .423 with 39 runs scored and 37 RBIs.
