On the same day Mexico opened the 2026 World Cup with a 3-0 victory over South Africa, Peso Pluma was already on stage celebrating.
The Jalisco-born artist headlined the Adidas 2026 World Cup Opening Watch Party at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on Thursday, June 11. Before performing, he sat down with Billboard to discuss the win, his hopes for the national team, and the recent chart performance of his latest single.
Pluma described himself as euphoric after the match and said he was proud to wear the jersey while watching it. He was direct about his expectations for the rest of the tournament. "Well, [I'm] really happy because we debuted on the right foot. Mexico's going to win. Mexico has to win. Attract it — the law of attraction — Mexico's going to win," he told Billboard.
When asked what he hoped for Mexico heading into its next match against South Korea on June 18, Pluma said, "May God bless them and may they give it their all, so that this time we're in that [final] game. And we're going to be supporting from [the] outside, as it should be."
The conversation also turned to his music. His song Daño, from his 2026 album Dinastía, peaked at No. 5 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart and was sitting at No. 9 at the time of the interview. Pluma spoke about what the song has meant to fans on the road. "We are very happy, because it's a song we all really like from the album," he said. "It's a song from Dinastía that stood out. The fans in Mexico really liked it and also here in the United States. And it's a song that throughout the whole tour, [fans] cried and sang and yelled the lyrics to, and that fills our soul."
Mexico's next World Cup match against South Korea is scheduled for June 18.
