Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital on Sunday. His condition was not disclosed.
McConnell spokesman David Popp said in an emailed statement that McConnell "is receiving excellent care" but did not specify the reason for the hospitalization, according to NPR.
The Kentucky Republican, 84, has dealt with a series of health issues in recent years. In 2023, he froze and appeared unable to speak for nearly 30 seconds during his weekly press conference as leader. He also suffered a series of falls, including one that caused a concussion and left him absent from the Senate for nearly six weeks. A childhood bout of polio left him with a partially paralyzed leg, and he regularly moves around the Capitol in a wheelchair, often with the help of staff.
McConnell announced in 2024 that he would step down from his leadership role. In 2025, he said he would not seek another six-year term. After more than four decades in the Senate, his time in office is set to end at the close of this year.
