Twenty years after the first film, The Devil Wears Prada has become a billion-dollar franchise.
According to Deadline, the sequel has now pushed the combined total of both films past $1 billion worldwide. The sequel alone accounts for $676 million of that, with $217.9 million coming from domestic theaters alone. The original 2006 film, based on Lauren Weisberger's New York Times bestselling novel, finished its theatrical run at $326.5 million in reported currency.
Disney released the sequel on May 1 in the U.S., skipping a Marvel opener to lead the summer with the fashion drama instead. That gamble paid off immediately. The film opened to $233 million worldwide and $76.7 million domestically in its first weekend, both franchise records. Within its first nine days stateside, it had already surpassed the entire domestic lifetime gross of the original, which finished at $124.7 million.
The sequel brought back the original's director David Frankel, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, and the full core cast: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt. The production budget was $100 million before global marketing costs.
The film has performed across multiple major international markets. The UK leads with $45.8 million, followed by Italy at $37.3 million, where it is the number one non-local film in the territory. Japan has contributed $31.9 million, Germany $33.2 million, and Brazil $33.2 million. Australia has added $29.5 million, Mexico $29.4 million, and France $26.9 million. Even China, often a difficult market for Hollywood films without major local connections, has contributed $15.3 million.
The sequel currently ranks as the number four MPA global release of 2026 so far, and the number three MPA international release year to date. Disney holds three of the top six spots on the global list and three of the top seven domestically.
The original film built a loyal fanbase that has clearly stayed connected to the material. The sequel's offshore gross of $458.1 million already more than doubles the original's international total of $201.8 million in reported dollars.
