James Gunn's Superman opened the DC Universe's film era and now has three confirmed follow-ups in development, spanning two movies and one television series.

The film grossed $618.7 million against a production budget of $225 million, landing in the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2025. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an 83% critics' score and a 90% popcornmeter score. Critics praised its depth, visual style, and the performances of David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

The first follow-up is already almost here. Supergirl, focused on Clark's Kryptonian cousin Kara Zor-El, played by Milly Alcock, is set for a June 26, 2026 release. Corenswet will reprise his role as Superman in that film, which takes place after the events of the first movie. Kara was introduced at the end of Superman, setting up the spinoff directly.

After Supergirl comes Man of Tomorrow, the direct Superman sequel. According to Screen Rant, that film will see Superman and Lex Luthor reluctantly team up to face Brainiac, a superintelligent alien android played by Lars Eidinger. Man of Tomorrow is projected for a 2027 release and picks up after the events of Supergirl, meaning the three films are designed to build on one another sequentially.

The third confirmed project is a TV series centered on Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo. The spinoff had been rumored since Superman's release and was officially confirmed in June 2026. DC Universe co-lead Peter Safran addressed the announced projects in a new interview, discussing the slate they are currently prioritizing.

The DC Universe itself launched on television in 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos before moving to theaters with Superman. The franchise replaced the DC Extended Universe, which ended after a series of underperforming films. Gunn and Safran were brought in to rebuild the brand, retaining some DCEU cast members while introducing a largely new lineup for most major roles.

Corenswet's Superman presents the character as an established hero already navigating the tension between his Kryptonian origins and his life on Earth with his adoptive family. The sequels are expected to expand that story and the wider world around it, including the supporting characters who have already appeared and those still to come.
