Game 5 of the NBA Finals averaged 24.5 million viewers across ABC and ESPN on Saturday, making it the most-watched NBA Finals game since 1998. That was the year Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls won their sixth title in eight seasons. Viewership peaked at 33 million in the final moments as the New York Knicks sealed the victory.

According to a report by Deadline, citing Nielsen Big Data and Panel data, the entire series was equally dominant. Across five games, ABC and ESPN averaged 20.6 million viewers, the highest series average since 1998 as well.

The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs to claim the franchise's first NBA championship in 53 years. Nielsen data showed the Finals generated the largest viewing audience of the day across all of television during the series, leading every key male and adult demographic throughout the run.

The championship marks a significant moment for a franchise that had gone more than five decades without a title. The combination of the long drought, a major market team, and a compelling matchup against the Spurs appeared to drive casual viewers back to the sport in numbers the league has not seen in nearly three decades.

Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals Draw Biggest Audience in 28 Years

The 2026 NBA Finals became a major moment for the NBA. The series between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs was the most-watched NBA Finals in 28 years. It averaged 20.6 million viewers on ABC and ESPN.

That made it the biggest Finals audience since 1998.

The series ended in five games. The Knicks beat the Spurs 94-90 in Game 5. The win gave New York its first NBA championship in 53 years.

Game 5 was the biggest night of the series. It averaged 24.5 million viewers. The audience peaked at 33 million viewers at 11:15 p.m. ET. That made it the most-watched NBA Finals Game 5 since 1998.

The Finals also helped cap a huge postseason for the league. Across ABC, ESPN, Amazon Prime Video, NBC, and Peacock, the NBA had its most-watched postseason in 28 years.

The Finals also delivered the highest share on record for an NBA Finals, with a 38.3 share.

The attention was not limited to television.

The five-game series produced massive activity online. The NBA said the Finals generated 15 billion social media views and counting. That was the most ever for an NBA Finals. It was also nearly triple the previous record set in 2025.

Game 5 alone generated more than 4 billion social media views. That broke the single-game record set earlier in the series during Game 4.

The postseason also set a larger social media mark. Eight playoff games passed one billion views online. That showed how much the NBA has grown beyond regular television.

For Knicks fans, the title ended decades of waiting.

New York had not won an NBA championship since 1973. The win gave Madison Square Garden and the city a new basketball memory after years of frustration.

It also changed the story for head coach Mike Brown.

Brown was hired after the Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau last spring. At the time, he did not seem to be the team’s first choice. The Knicks were linked to several other coaching candidates.

But Brown proved to be the right fit.

He is now a five-time NBA champion coach. Four of those titles came when he was an assistant coach. This was his first championship as a head coach.

Brown won one title as an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003. He later won three more as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors.

Now he has a championship of his own with the Knicks.

The title also placed him in rare company. Brown joined Red Holzman as the only coaches to lead the Knicks to an NBA championship.

The date made the moment even more special. Brown won the title on June 13, or 6/13. The Knicks have a banner at Madison Square Garden that reads “Holzman 613,” honoring Holzman’s 613 wins with the franchise.

Brown said he tried not to worry about the hiring process. He said he could only control his own interview and his own work.

That calm approach carried into the playoffs.

The Knicks had a rough start in the first round. They fell behind the Atlanta Hawks 2-1 after two one-point losses. Some fans questioned whether Brown was the right coach.

The Knicks answered by going 15-1 the rest of the way.

Players credited Brown for keeping the team steady. Josh Hart said Brown understood what it takes to build a championship team. He said Brown helped the players grow as people and as teammates.

Brown also kept the mood light during the pressure of the postseason.

That balance mattered. The Knicks played with focus, but they did not look overwhelmed by the moment.

By the end of the Finals, Brown had turned doubt into history.

The Knicks had their championship. The NBA had its biggest Finals audience in nearly three decades. Fans had one of the most talked-about series in league history.

The 2026 NBA Finals showed the power of live sports. It also showed the pull of a New York championship run.

For the NBA, it was a ratings win.

For the Knicks, it was something much bigger.

It was the end of a 53-year wait.
