A Fort Collins father is cancer-free after his son donated stem cells to treat his leukemia, according to a report by Denver7.

The father had been diagnosed with leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Stem cell transplants are used in certain leukemia cases to replace diseased bone marrow with healthy cells capable of producing normal blood cells. When a family member serves as the donor, there is a higher chance the cells will be compatible with the recipient's immune system.

The son's donation provided his father with a chance at recovery that would not otherwise have been available. The procedure involves collecting stem cells from the donor, then giving the recipient high doses of chemotherapy or radiation to destroy the cancerous cells before introducing the donated stem cells.

Recovery from a stem cell transplant is a lengthy process. The recipient's immune system is severely weakened during treatment, and patients typically spend extended periods in the hospital and require close monitoring for months afterward. Complications including infection and a condition called graft-versus-host disease, in which the donated cells attack the recipient's body, are serious risks.

The Fort Collins case represents an outcome that stem cell specialists describe as the goal of the procedure. The father has beaten the disease, and both he and his son spoke to Denver7 about the experience, though the report did not include additional clinical details about the specific type of leukemia or the transplant center involved.

Stem cell donation can be done through two methods: collecting cells directly from the bone marrow through a surgical procedure, or through a process that draws stem cells out of the bloodstream after the donor receives medication to stimulate their production. The report did not specify which method was used in this case.

Leukemia is one of the most common blood cancers in the United States. Stem cell transplantation remains one of the most aggressive and potentially curative treatments available for certain types of the disease.
