Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez will headline a new animated film from Illumination, the studio behind the Despicable Me and Super Mario Bros. franchises. The project, called Not Alone, was announced at the Annecy Animation Festival and is scheduled to open in theaters on April 16, 2027.
According to Variety, Chalamet will voice Joe, described as "an introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone." Gomez plays Fran, "a brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world's first-ever plant-fueled rocket." The two characters are thrown together when they are assigned to prepare for the launch of Fran's plant-fueled rocket, and three small aliens called Dunk, Welly and Shirm take refuge in Joe's home. The aliens are fleeing a bumbling law enforcement officer named Zandro and believe Fran's rocket can get them home.
Brett Goldstein, best known for Ted Lasso, will voice Officer Zandro. Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, and Jamie Demetriou will voice the three alien characters. The supporting cast also includes Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris.
The film is directed by Eric Guillon, who previously co-directed Despicable Me 3 and worked as a designer on the original Despicable Me and Minions. Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val are co-directing. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri is producing. Richard Curtis, Joy Poirel, and David Distenfeld serve as executive producers.
The film represents Chalamet's first animated feature voice role. Gomez is not new to animation, having voiced characters in the Hotel Transylvania film series. Illumination arrives at Annecy having just premiered its latest film, Minions & Monsters, which has received positive early reviews.
Not Alone is set for release on April 16, 2027, from Universal Pictures.
