Netflix's 3 Body Problem is heading into its second season shorter than expected, and the numbers for the third and final season may be even smaller.
According to a production report cited by Collider, Season 2 of the series will run for six episodes, down from the eight episodes that made up Season 1. The evidence comes from a wrap photo listing episodes 201 through 206. The same report, drawing on earlier production intel and tax-credit filings tied to the show's Hungary shoot, indicates that Seasons 2 and 3 may total only 11 episodes combined. That would leave Season 3 with just five episodes.
Netflix has not publicly confirmed those episode counts and previously declined to comment on the production schedule.
The streamer had already confirmed the series would continue through Seasons 2 and 3 to complete the story. The question now is whether the reduced episode counts will allow the show to wrap its narrative in a satisfying way.
When 3 Body Problem arrived on Netflix, it stood out for its scale. The production felt large and expensive at a moment when prestige science fiction had largely migrated to Apple TV+. Season 1 was led by Jess Hong as Jin Cheng, Jovan Adepo as Saul Durand, John Bradley as Jack Rooney, Eiza González as Auggie Salazar, Alex Sharp as Will Downing, Benedict Wong as Da Shi, Liam Cunningham as Thomas Wade, and Rosalind Chao as Ye Wenjie.
The show was adapted from the acclaimed Chinese science fiction novel series by Liu Cixin. The first season drew significant attention for its ambition and its willingness to operate on a massive narrative and visual scale.
Netflix has not announced a release date for Season 2.
